July 12, 2024
Author(s): Samuel Dyer, MD, PhD

Introduction

Transparent salary data and access to it are crucial for maintaining fair and competitive compensation practices within the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) profession. This article offers an unprecedented review of base salary trends with a detailed five-year analysis of salary data for MSLs and MSL leaders, utilizing data collected from annual salary surveys conducted by the Medical Science Liaison Society (MSL Society) from respondents in the USA (1,2,3,4,5). Since 2014, the MSL Society has conducted an annual global salary survey, creating the largest and most comprehensive database of MSL and MSL leader salary information in the world.

Understanding these trends is beneficial for several reasons. For applicants, transparency provides the necessary information to make informed career decisions and the ability to negotiate competitive offers if necessary (6,7). Salary transparency can help close gender pay gaps and promote equity and fair pay. For hiring managers, knowledge of these trends ensures they can offer competitive compensation packages, which are vital for attracting and retaining top talent. In fact, this data is so essential that the majority (61%) of MSL leaders in the USA utilize the MSL Society’s annual MSL Salary & Compensation Survey as part of their salary benchmarking process, making it an essential tool for recruitment efforts (5). For HR professionals, access to this comprehensive data allows organizations to align their compensation strategies with industry standards, promoting job satisfaction and likely reducing turnover. This data also provides a foundation for advocating better compensation structures and professional growth opportunities.
